CDA to ALAC Converter offers you an easy and fast way to convert CDA to ALAC audio with high quality. Audio CD Track or .cda file is a small (44 bytes) file generated by Microsoft Windows for each track on an audio CD (it is a virtual file that can be read by Windows software, but is not actually present on the CD audio media). The file contains indexing information that programs can use to play or rip the disc. The file is given a name in the format Track##.cda. The .cda files do not contain the actual PCM wave data, but instead tell where on the disc the track starts and stops. If the file is "copied" from the CD-ROM to the computer, it becomes useless, since it is only a shortcut to part of the disc. People often search for "cda to alac converter online" or "how to convert cda to alac online" without realizing that Audio CDs are large in size and by the time you upload, convert and download the files you are better off downloading CDA to ALAC converter on your PC and perform convention locally = 0 second waiting for uploading and downloading. You can even convert whole music libraries retaining the folder and filename structure. The CD Ripper supports the CDDB/freedb online CD database. It will automatically query song information and write it to ID3v2 or other title information tags. Have any questions regarding CDA to ALAC Converter? See the below Frequently Asked Questions.

Q: What is CDA ?

A: Compact Disc Digital Audio. A file with the extension .cda is a small (44 byte) virtual file generated by Microsoft Windows for each audio track on a standard "Red Book" CD-DA format audio CD as defined by the Table of Contents (ToC) (within the lead-in's subcode). These files are shown in the directory for the CD being viewed in the format Track##.cda, where ## is the number of each individual track. The .cda files do not contain the actual PCM sound wave data, but instead tell where on the disc each track starts and stops. If the file is "copied" from the CD to a computer, it cannot be used on its own because it is only a shortcut to part of the disc. However, some audio editing and CD creation programs will, from the user's perspective, load .cda files as though they are actual audio data files, and allow the user to listen to them. This should not be confused with the tracks actually containing the audio data on the CD.

Q: What is ALAC ?

A: ALAC Apple Lossless, also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), is an audio coding format, and its reference audio codec implementation, developed by by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music and playback on iTunes and QuickTime and on Apple iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPad and iPods. The ALAC data compression method is "lossless", meaning it reduces the size of audio files with no loss of information. Apple Lossless supports up to 8 channels of audio at 16, 20, 24 and 32 bit depth with a maximum sample rate of 384kHz. Apple Lossless data is stored within an MP4 container with the filename extension .m4a. This extension is also used by Apple for lossy AAC audio data in an MP4 container (same container, different audio encoding). However, Apple Lossless is not a variant of AAC (which is a lossy format), but rather a distinct lossless format that uses linear prediction similar to other lossless codecs. Its compression isn't quite as efficient as FLAC, so your files may be a bit bigger, but it's fully supported by iTunes and iOS (while FLAC is not). These other lossless codecs, such as FLAC and Shorten, are not natively supported by Apple's iTunes software (either the Mac OS or Windows versions) or by iOS devices, so users of iTunes software who want to use a lossless format which allows the addition of metadata (unlike WAV/AIFF or other PCM-type formats, where metadata is usually ignored) have to use ALAC. All current iOS devices can play ALAC–encoded files. ALAC also does not use any DRM scheme; but by the nature of the MP4 container, it is feasible that DRM could be applied to ALAC much in the same way it is applied to files in other QuickTime containers. According to Apple, audio files compressed with its lossless codec will use up "about half the storage space" that the uncompressed data would require. Testers using a selection of music have found that compressed files are about 40% to 60% the size of the originals depending on the kind of music, which is similar to other lossless formats. Furthermore, compared to some other formats, it is not as difficult to decode, making it practical for a limited-power device, such as older iOS devices. Partly because of the use of an MP4 container, Apple Lossless does not contain integrated error checking. When decoded, the ALAC stream is identical to the original uncompressed audio file, bit-for-bit. The Apple Lossless Audio Codec sources are available under the Apache license.
