Once the files are selected, the next step is to select the output settings in APE to MPC Converter.

2. Select the output settings.

The second step is to select the output settings. To begin, select the folder to save the output file to and choose the action to be executed if the output file already exists - create a new file, overwrite or skip the existing file.

You can also set the APE to MPC Converter to delete a source file after conversion and preserve the the original folder structure, when doing batch conversion.

Finally, you should select the output format and audio quality. In the MPC dialog box, choose the format settings for the final MPC files. Depending on quality you need, select the bitrate of the file, sample rate and the number of channels. You will probably lose some audio content if you choose the mono option. You can choose what sample rate you want to use. 44.1 kHz (or 44100 Hz) is the sample rate used by audio CDs. Less than that and you'll start to hear the loss in quality. You can choose the bit rate you want to use.

Q: What is APE ?

A: Monkey's Audio is an algorithm and file format for lossless audio data compression. Monkey's Audio does not discard data during the process of encoding, unlike lossy compression methods such as AAC, MP3, Vorbis and Musepack. Data file compression is employed in order to reduce bandwidth, file transfer time, or storage requirements. A digital recording (such as a CD) encoded to the Monkey's Audio format can be decompressed into an identical copy of the original audio data. As with the FLAC and Apple Lossless format, files encoded to Monkey's Audio are typically reduced to about half of the original size, with data transfer rates and bandwidth requirements being reduced accordingly. Monkey's Audio's advantages are better compression rates compared to FLAC and WavPack, as well as multithreading/multicore support. Monkey's Audio main drawbacks are the fact that it employs a symmetric algorithm, meaning the decoding takes comparable resources to encoding, which makes it unsuitable for all but the fastest portable players (via Rockbox firmware), and that it has limited support on software platforms other than Windows; on other platforms only decoding is officially supported by third-party programs. Although the original source code is freely available, the license is not considered to be an open source one. Monkey's Audio files use the filename extension .ape for audio, and .apl for track metadata. Like any lossless compression scheme, Monkey's Audio format takes up several times as much space as lossy compression formats like AAC, MP3 and Vorbis. A Monkey's Audio file is 3–5 times as large as a 192 kbit/s bitrate MP3 file.

Q: What is MPC ?

A: MPC is an audio file format used by Musepack. Musepack or MPC is an open source lossy audio codec, specifically optimized for transparent compression of stereo audio at bitrates of 160–180 (manual set allows bitrates up to 320) kbit/s. It was formerly known as MPEGplus, MPEG+ or MP+. MPC files are compressed audio files based on MPEG-2 algorithms. MPC files do not use a constant bitrate, but have a changing bitrate that adapts to the need of a specific portion of the audio data. This allows for higher-quality audio. The psychoacoustic model of MPC is based on MPEG ISO model 2, but is extended by CVD (clear voice detection). The quantization algorithm of the MPC encoder performs spectral shaping of the noise, called adaptive noise shaping (ANS), in order to overcome the low frequency resolution of the polyphase quadrature filter bands. Musepack is mainly optimized for transparent encoding at the "--standard" preset (175-185 kbit/s). Very few optimisations have been made at lower bitrates (like 128 kbit/s). Musepack is a purely variable bitrate format and does not work at a constant bitrate. A big part of Musepack's quality comes from its highly variable bitrate handling which results in low bitrate for less demanding regions of the audio data and higher bitrate where it's needed. This allows MPC files to be as small as possible and not lose any valuable bits like encoders that work at a constant bitrate. After all, the purpose of a lossy audio encoder is to provide the highest possible quality at the lowest possible file size, and Musepack represents progress, as opposed to old, suboptimal legacy methods.
