Q: What is AAC ?

A: Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is an audio coding standard for lossy digital audio compression. Designed to be the successor of the MP3 format, AAC generally achieves better sound quality than MP3 at similar bit rates. AAC has been standardized by ISO and IEC, as part of the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 specifications.

Q: What is AIFF ?

A: Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) is an audio file format standard used for storing sound data for personal computers and other electronic audio devices. The file extension for the standard AIFF format is .aiff or .aif. For the compressed variants it is supposed to be .aifc, but .aiff or .aif are accepted as well by audio applications supporting the format. The format initially created by Apple Computer for storing and transmitting high-quality sampled audio data in 1988 based on Electronic Arts' Interchange File Format (IFF, widely used on Amiga systems) and is most commonly used on Apple Macintosh computer systems. An AIFF file contains the raw audio data, channel information (monophonic orstereophonic), bit depth, sample rate, and application-specific data areas. The application-specific data areas let different applications add informationto the file header that remains there even if the file is opened andprocessed by another application. For example, a file could retaininformation about selected regions of the audio data used for recallingzoom levels not used by other applications. The audio data in most AIFF files is uncompressed pulse-code modulation (PCM). It supports a variety of bit resolutions, sample rates, and channels of audio. This type of AIFF files uses much more disk space than lossy formats like MP3—about 10 MB for one minute of stereo audio at a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit depth of 16 bits. There is also a compressed variant of AIFF known as AIFF-C or AIFC, with various defined compression codecs. In addition to audio data, AIFF can include loop point data and the musical note of a sample, for use by hardware samplers and musical applications. AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is one of the two most-used audio file formats used in the Apple Macintosh operating system. The other is Sound Designer II (SDII). Most CD writers can accept AIFF or SDII files interchangeably when writing a Red Book audio CD. AIFF is sometimes referred to as "Apple Interchange File Format."
